A brief recollection:
June 29, 1969. Cubs-Cardinals doubleheader at Wrigley Field. Billy Williams Day. In the first game Billy tied the then-National League record for consecutive games played. In the second game he broke it. The record was held by Stan "The Man" Musial.
Billy celebrated in style, going 5 for 9, as the Cubs swept the doubleheader. The first game was a classic Ferguson Jenkins-Bob Gibson duel. They both pitched complete games, of course, and the Cubs won 3 to 1. The Cubs then won the second game 12 to 1.
And we were there, first row upper deck grandstand, along with 41,058 close personal friends. And I’ve got the scorecards to prove it.
