The Tribune reported great news yesterday: While the Cubs will be renovating the restrooms at Wrigley Field this offseason, they will not be removing the troughs in the men’s rooms. Hey Hey! Holy Mackerel!! The troughs are among the things that make Wrigley Field unique and special. Also, given the amount of available space at Wrigley Field, the troughs are a lot more efficient than individual urinals. And one final thing, which I already mentioned here.
The not-so-good news is that there seems to be a real chance the Cubs may move their spring training base from Mesa, Arizona to Naples, Florida. I understand that the Cubs want to get the best possible deal for a new spring training facility. If the Cubs want to use Naples to get more out of Mesa, that is fine. But they ought to stay in Mesa. A lot of Cubs fans decided to retire to Arizona precisely because that’s where the Cubs train. These are real fans following their team. It would be a breach of faith with those people for the Cubs to leave now.
