On January 10, 2009, the Chicago Tribune endorsed Andy McKenna in the Republican primary for governor. (At the same time they endorsed neither person running for the Democratic nomination.) I don’t think Mr. McKenna is the best candidate, even for the reason listed by the Tribune (his willingness to "look calmly at House Speaker Michael Madigan or Senate President John Cullerton as often as needed and say, ‘No.’")
I think Kirk Dillard is the best candidate, and I said so in this letter to the editor, which was printed in today’s Tribune:
"The Tribune endorsed Andy McKenna for the Republican nomination for Governor because they think he can say no to Speaker of the House Mike Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. Well, the Republicans have had a governor who said no to Mike Madigan. In fact, Jim Edgar did it so often from 1990 to 1998 that he became known as ‘Governor No.’
Jim Edgar is supporting Kirk Dillard for governor. That’s good enough for me, and that is why I will be voting for Kirk Dillard on February 2."

Note: I have not been able to find a link to the letter at chicagotribune.com. If I am able to find one, I will add it. Update (1/20/10 9:30 a.m.): Here is the link.
The truth about how Republican Kirk Dillard really is.

I know about the Barack Obama ad, and I am supporting Kirk Dillard anyway. I may not agree with Kirk Dillard on all of the issues, but I think he has the best chance to get elected. And that is important for two reasons. First, the most important issue facing the state is paying its bills. They have to be paid, and of all of the Republican candidates I think Kirk Dillard has the experience, both legislatively and in the executive branch, to get the job done.
Second, Illinois redistricts in 2011. It is too late to capture either house of the legislature, which means we need a Republican governor to have at least some say in the process. Kirk Dillard has the best chance to win in November
