In all of the talk about Carlos Zambrano going to the bullpen for the Cubs, people are forgetting that, back in 2000 and 2001, when Carlos was a top prospect for the Cubs, the big question was whether he would start or close. Take a look at his stats in 2000. After starting nine games for West Tenn in Double A, Carlos was moved up to the Iowa Cubs, where he pitched 34 games, all in relief, picking up six saves.
One more thing. As part of Baseball America’s review of the Cubs’ Top 10 Prospects in its February 19, 2001 issue, they projected the Cubs’ 2004 lineup. And where did they project Carlos, who was listed as the Cubs’ number 5 prospect? Closer.
