On April 25, 1876, the Chicago White Stockings (later the Chicago Cubs) of the new National League of Professional Baseball Clubs played their first game, beating the Louisville Grays 4 to 0. Ross Barnes, who would later that year hit the first home run in National League history and was the first batting champion of the National League, scored two runs. Al Spalding (yes, that Al Spalding) pitched a shutout for the White Stockings, and Adrian “Cap” Anson played third base.
One hundred thirty-five years later, the Chicago Cubs are still playing in Chicago, the only team to have played in the same city for that whole period. Go Cubs!
