Omaha means different things to different people. To railroad buffs, it is the eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad. For historians it could be Omaha beach at Normandy, the bloodiest beach on D-Day. Or it could be the home of the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War, which made Omaha one of the top three targets (along with Washington, D.C. and New York City) for Russian nuclear missiles.
For investors, of course, Omaha is the home of Warren Buffet. And for fans of fantasy, Omaha is the home of the Wizard of Oz.
But every June since 1950, Omaha has meant something else, too. After Super Bowls, the winning players will say, when asked where they are going now that they have won the Super Bowl, that they are going to Disney World.* But the goal for college baseball players is to “go to Omaha” – because Omaha is where the College World Series is played.
Out of the 64 teams that start in the tournament each year, eight make it through the regionals and super-regionals for the chance to "go to Omaha.”
This year, Jennie’s alma mater, the University of Virginia, is one of those eight. They made it by scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth in a rally that started with two outs, nobody on base, and two strikes on the batter. It was sad for their opponents, but it was a great time in Charlottesville.
The 2011 College World Series starts today. In Omaha. Go ‘Hoos!
---------
* In Disney commercials, obviously.
Wahoowa, let's go Hoos!
