As Rick Perry surges in the polls as the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, let me mention one name: Fred Thompson. I am not saying Governor Perry’s candidacy will collapse the way Fred Thompson’s did in 2008, but it is fair to say that the election is a long way off and a lot could happen.
In any case, the most important thing for Republicans is not who gets the nomination, but making sure that whoever does get the nomination wins. And that somebody who can win is the one who gets the nomination.
