Earlier this season, Cubs manager Dale Sveum was bemoaning the fact that Alfonso Soriano had not hit any home runs. The fact that Sori had not home runs through May 14 was supposedly one of the reasons the Cubs were only 15-20.
Well, since May 15, Soriano has hit a major league-leading twelve home runs. In that same time span the Cubs have lost 20 out of 24 games.
If that is a fluke, here’s another one: In 1998 the Cubs made the playoffs with a record of 90-73. Sammy Sosa, in that summer of McGwire and Sosa, hit 66 home runs, including 20 in June, which was, and is, a major league record for home runs in one month. How did the Cubs do in June of 1998? They were 12-15, the only month all season that the Cubs were below .500.
