Today is the 67th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb on Japan, and there are the normal number of articles about how immoral it was to do this or how the purpose wasn’t to save lives (or end the war) but to demonstrate our power to the Soviet Union.
I am not going to get into all of these arguments. I have done so before. Today I just want to say that anybody who thinks we did this for some reason other than to end the war as quickly as possible, and to save as many American lives as possible, has never had the responsibility for the lives of American soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors in his (or her) hands - and never had to answer to their spouses and children and parents for their lives.
