June 23, 1984, deserves a longer post, but I don’t have the time. I’m going back to Omaha on Tuesday (more on that later) after the Cubs game tonight. Still, 30 years ago today, national TV twice tried to end the Cubs-Cardinals game before it was over. In both the ninth and the tenth, the credits were rolling as Ryne Sandberg came to bat. And both times the credits got put on hold as Sandberg tied the game with a home run against Bruce Sutter.
