I missed this over the weekend: Last Friday, there were reports in the German media that an employee of the German foreign intelligence agency had been arrested on suspicion of spying for the United States. The reports are that the person transmitted to the US information from the Bundestag (the lower house of the German legislature) committee investigating National Security Agency surveillance in Germany.
I realize one should not be a prude or naive about countries spying on each other. But still. What are we doing here? Is it really necessary to spy on Germany? Aren’t there other countries to spy on, who really aren’t our friends?
Does President Obama know what’s going on here? Or are our spy agencies just going around spying on our closest friends without letting anybody know?
