In this morning’s Chicago Tribune, Ed Sherman reported on the interest in the vacancy on the Cubs’ radio team for 2015. (Judd Sirott, who was the third man in the booth last year, is staying with WGN to concentrate on the Blackhawks.)
According to Ron Gleason of WBBM, the station received over 400 resumes for the job, many of them from people without any broadcasting experience:
“I got a number of resumes from people who had absolutely no broadcast experience. They basically said they were lifetime Cubs fans who got an autograph from their favorite player when they were 7. Because of that, they are perfect for the job. I don't want to demean or make fun of them. These are wonderful people. But there is a skill and craft that goes into working in broadcasting.”
Uh, Ron, the people you are describing sound just like the Cubs’ color man before Ron Coomer and Keith Moreland, and we loved him. Because, even though he never had the “skill and craft that goes into … broadcasting,” Ron Santo was a lifetime Cubs fan – from the time he watched Ernie Banks on the Game of the Week when he was just a teenager in Seattle, Washington.

UPDATE (2/7/15 11:25 am): I forgot to mention Bobby Keith Moreland. I'm sorry. I have added him.
