I don’t buy much on E-Bay, but occasionally I do. Sometimes it is the only place you can find what you want, like an old-style cookie press or a Carlos Zambrano Cubs shirt. So, last week I received an e-mail from E-Bay saying that I earned a Yellow Star rating by my name. Apparently, E-Bay thinks this is a good thing. I don’t, and I don’t want a Yellow Star rating. Because I know what a Yellow Star means.
In 1941, the Nazis issued a decree requiring all Jews in Germany to wear a yellow star on their clothes, with the word “Jude” (i.e., Jew) inscribed on it. This was eventually enforced in all Nazi-occupied Europe, except Denmark, where King Christian X is said to have threatened to wear a yellow star himself if Jews in Denmark were required to wear one. (Three cheers for Denmark.)
That is what a yellow star means, and E-Bay, I don’t want one. Because yellow stars have an evil history.
