Before Donald Trump’s win in yesterday’s Indiana primary, and Senator Cruz’s suspension of his candidacy, The Wall Street Journal wrote an editorial entitled “The Third-Party Temptation.” The editorial made the good point that a third party effort for president, organized by Republicans opposed to Donald Trump, could wind up costing the Republicans the House of Representatives, in addition to the presidency and the Senate.
Which brings me to suggest a corollary to William F. Buckley’s rule to vote for the most conservative electable candidate (or the rightwardmost viable candidate; in this case, much the same thing): Don’t do anything that will interfere with your ability to “stand athwart history, yelling stop.”
Donald Trump’s candidacy will cost Republicans the presidency and probably the Senate. Given that, Republicans must do nothing that will make it more difficult for them to keep control of the House. The solution as to what to do in November with Mr. Trump as the Republican nominee is simple: Don’t vote for president. But work harder to keep the House Republican and to retain the ability to stand athwart history, yelling stop – successfully.
