Now, it’s the reports that keep on coming. On Wednesday, the State Department’s Inspector General issued a report that concluded former Secretary Clinton’s use of a private email system and her lax recordkeeping practices violated State Department policies. I’m not going to go into detail on the report. You can find it all over the Internet. And while the report notes that prior Secretaries of State used private emails and/or may not have archived emails properly, the report:
“singled out Mrs. Clinton for the security risks involved in using a private email account as well as her failure to immediately turn over thousands of pages of work emails upon leaving government in 2013.
The inspector general noted internal rules about email and cybersecurity had grown ‘considerably more detailed and more sophisticated’ by the time Mrs. Clinton came into office. ‘Secretary Clinton’s cybersecurity practices accordingly must be evaluated in light of these more comprehensive directives,’ the report said.”
Plus, the report didn’t even go into all of the emails that Secretary Clinton’s people deleted from her server, and didn’t give to the State Department, because they were “personal.” Why should we believe her on that anymore?
Which brings us to the question of what is happening with the FBI investigation into Secretary Clinton’s email system and practices. Earlier this month, FBI Director James Comey said:
“‘In any investigation, especially one of intense public interest … we want to do it well, and we want to do it promptly,’ he said. ‘So I feel pressure to do both of those things. … But as between the two, we will always choose well.’” (ellipses in original)
Which is interesting given the speed with which the Department of Justice, of which the FBI is part, reacted to the law North Carolina passed with respect to the use of bathrooms. DOJ filed a lawsuit against North Carolina within a few weeks after the law was passed.
But that was about which bathroom you can use. Which would appear to be much more urgent than which person you should elect president.
