Democrats are upset that Attorney General William Barr has authorized an investigation into whether the law enforcement and intelligence communities had proper basis for investigating the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential campaign. The main point they seem to make is that Donald Trump is so bad that, of course, there were proper grounds. It’s sort of like the Robert Mueller investigation. When it started out, the Democrats, et al, “knew” Mr. Mueller would find evidence that then-candidate Trump, or at least the Trump campaign, colluded with the Russians – because, after all, Donald Trump is bad, so how else could he have won. When Mr. Mueller didn’t find evidence of collusion, they pretty much decided that Russian interference was the same thing as collusion in terms of justification for getting rid of President Trump.1
They are also upset that Attorney General Barr has been given authority to declassify information in connection with this investigation. Because they say he will do it, without regard to national security, in order to help President Trump. Of course, many of these same people want to breach laws and ignore privacy concerns with respect to the redactions in the Mueller report (also here), so consistency doesn’t really seem to be a real issue here – other than “President Trump is bad” and nothing else matters.
If Mr. Comey had not announced the re-opening of the investigation into former Secretary Clinton’s emails just a week and a half before the election, she very likely might have won. I realize that, within a week or so, he announced there was still no problem, but by then the damage been done. His decision was especially bad because at least some people in the FBI/DoJ knew about the additional emails by early October, at the latest. There was plenty of time to get them reviewed before the last week and a half of the campaign.
Mr. Comey may have decided he had to make the late October announcement because he had already violated DoJ rules in July when he took it upon himself to announce there was no reason to charge Hillary Clinton regarding her emails. It was just one screw-up after another for Mr. Comey, the last of which very possibly cost Hillary Clinton the election. But, because Mr. Comey got fired by President Trump, Democrats have made him into a political saint. Bizarre.

1 Democrats have also decided that allegedly trying to obstruct an investigation into a crime that didn’t happen (i.e., collusion with the Russkies) is enough to get rid of President Trump. There may be a theory here, but then these same people said that lying under oath wasn’t enough to get rid of a president when it was just about sex, so I’m not sure there is any consistency in the their view – other than President Trump is bad and anything and everything is a reason to get rid of him.
