Sixty years ago today, the Berlin Wall went up. It started with barbed wire and wound up with concrete, killing strips, and attack dogs. The Berlin Wall seems out of date and out of history, at least out of the history we talk about today. But for those who were alive during it, it was what history was about.

“The Tunnel,” a 90-minute documentary that told the story of how three West Berlin university students dug a tunnel under the Wall and helped 26 friends and family members escape East Berlin, was broadcast on NBC on December 10, 1962. It won three Emmies. You can find the full film on YouTube here.
