The Great Georgia 2021 Senate “What If?”

November of 2020, there were 50 Republican senators and 48 Democrats.  But there were two races in Georgia where there had to be run-off elections because no candidate had gotten 50%+1 of the votes cast on election day (as required by Georgia law).  In both races, the Republican candidate got more votes than the Democratic candidate on election day, but the Republican had not gotten 50%+1.  So there were going to be two run-off elections on January 5, 2021.  The Democrats won run-offs, thus giving the Democrats a 50-50 “majority” in the Senate because of Vice President Kamala Harris.

But what if Donald Trump, instead of going down to Georgia in December of 2020 in a snit and complaining he had been cheated out of the election and saying there was no way any Republican would be allowed to win anywhere, even in Georgia¹; what if President Trump had gone to Georgia in December of 2020 and tried to rally Republicans to vote for the Republican Senate candidates, telling his supporters that they needed to get out and vote so we could keep the Democrats from controlling the Senate?²  And what if, therefore, even one of the Republicans had won?  The Republicans would have controlled the Senate.  But what more might have happened?

Consider the possibilities:

• If the Democrats had not “controlled” the Senate, in addition to the House and the Presidency,³ would the progressives, and President Biden, still have proposed all those left-wing ideas they did (far beyond what Hillary Clinton was proposing in 2016)?  Would they still have talked about Joe Biden being the next FDR or LBJ?
• Would the progressive wing of the Democratic party still have expected President Biden to govern like the progressive wunder-kind they wanted him to be?
• Or would President Biden have proposed more middle-of-the-road programs – because the Democrats didn’t “control” the Senate?
• If the Administration, et al, had started more in the middle, would they have failed less and accomplished more – because those on the left would not have had to spend so much time getting over their disappointment about not getting the radical “reforms” they wanted and because it might have been easier to compromise if the Administration didn’t have so far to go from their original proposals to get to the middle?
• If Biden had stayed more in the middle, would voters in the middle be less disenchanted with him now?

² This would have required Donald Trump to not be a self-centered, narcissist who thinks only of himself, so it almost certainly wouldn’t have happened.  Still, it is interesting to consider the possibilities.
³ Anybody thinking the Democrats were going to be able to enact big “reforms” with a majority in the House of just nine seats and a majority in the Senate of zero plus a VP tie-breaker, was mostly fantasizing, but apparently a lot of them were.
